Tape Protection - Starting with Architecture

From day 1, STAR’s architecture and design ensure the protection of your tape data. STAR has maintained the integrity of your tape library as technology has evolved: new media types and automation in robotic and virtual external libraries.

Protects your data on all tape types: labeled or unlabeled, for all formats: physical, robotic or virtual.

Supports ASCII and EBCDIC labeled tapes.

Controls a virtually unlimited number of tapes in a single tape library.

Integrated with the OS 2200 media and label validating function, Media Manager. No local code in the Exec.

Operates within Fundamental Security, or Security Option 1, 2, or 3 environments.

Permits privileged administrators to manually update tape information.

Collects and records tape usage information automatically, including tape ownership.

All tape information is stored in a Tape Inventory File (TIF). The TIF can be distributed among all participating partitions via SLS (Shared Library Subsystem), giving a unified view of your library.

Provides for organizing scratch tapes in pools.

Media Manager console messages in languages other than English.

Automated utility to manage pools of scratch tapes. Also ensures FAS backup tapes are not scratched prematurely.

Provides automatic handling of foreign tapes without creating a record in the inventory file.

Automatic Attribute Feature (AAF) eliminates the need to make ECL changes or manual entries to accommodate STAR’s enhanced tape handling criteria.

Predefined reports, based on: volume, filename, vault name, owner, statistics, or an audit report based on history of tape use.

A labeling utility can relabel, dump, or unlabel a tape. An interface to the Media Manager ensures tape protection when labeling tapes.
